It's often forgotten it was Labuschagne's strong performances in one-day cricket that brought him to the attention of selectors in 2018. His past three domestic campaigns have yielded 926 runs at 51.44.

"If you look at his domestic one-day record, it’s excellent. The fact that he’s done so well, he’s given us some ammunition to select him but he also fits one of those roles we’re looking for," Langer said.

"The middle-order batsman, runs hard between the wickets, plays spin very well, very fit, gun fielder, bowls a few leggies - it’s a great package for one-day cricket so we're very excited to see how he goes.

"And he deserves that opportunity. Not just on his Test form but on his domestic one-day form as well."

Langer indicated selectors would not make major changes for the Test series with Bangladesh during the winter. It means opener Joe Burns is likely to be given another chance at the top after a steady, though unspectacular, summer.

Recalled for the Pakistan series, Burns averaged 32 in eight innings but struggled after his first-up 97 at the Gabba. Selectors, however, are happy with the combination he has formed with good friend David Warner.

"In the spirit of that continuity, it'd be hard to break up that squad," Langer said.

Veteran Moises Henriques is in contention to play his first Test in four years as selectors hunt for an all-rounder who would allow them to play two slow bowlers in spin-friendly conditions.

Henriques, Marcus Stoinis (foot), Mitchell Marsh (hand) and Cameron Green (back) have all had their bowling limited due to injuries. Marsh was chosen the last time Australia played an all-rounder in the fifth Ashes Test.

Langer wants Henriques to bowl more so he can be considered for the role. The 32-year-old has bowled just 20 overs in six Shield games this season, presumably to minimise his risk of injury, but is among the leading run scorers with 453 at 57.

"The reality is, none of our all-rounders are bowling. Moises doesn't bowl a lot, we'll probably talk to him about bowling as much as he can," Langer said.

"Marcus isn't bowling at the moment because of his foot. Mitch Marsh hasn't been bowling much. He bowled two overs in the Big Bash and Cameron Green has a stress fracture in his back."

Mitchell Swepson shapes as the leading contender to be Nathan Lyon's spin partner while all-rounder Ashton Agar and Victorian left-armer Jon Holland are also likely to be considered.

Senior assistant coach Andrew McDonald will take the reins in India from Langer, who has been given time off after a hectic first 20 months in the job.
