A Forest Fires Management worker who was on duty when he was killed in a car crash has been named as the third victim of the Victorian fires.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said 43-year-old Matt Kavanagh had been working as part of the fire response when he and his colleague were involved in a collision with another car on the Goulburn Valley Highway on Friday.
His colleague was hospitalised in a stable condition, but Mr Kavanagh – a husband and father of two children – died, Ms Neville said.
"This news has come as a huge shock to the entire emergency management community in the midst of an ongoing fire," she said.
"Our thoughts are with Matt’s colleagues and family, including his wife and children – Jude, his wife, and Ruben and Kate, his children."
