Two more matches will be played at the ground in round seven, and with compression of the AFL fixture on the cards, there could be even greater strain placed on the surface.

Most of the stadium's groundstaff had been on leave until last month because of the AFL's coronavirus hiatus.

But Sydney Showground chief operating officer Darryl Jeffrey said the surface was fit for play.

"We had a lot of our staff on stand down. We had skeleton crew in the office ... because at some stage we didn't know if there was going to be any AFL," Jeffrey said on Monday.

"Since these extra games have come on board, we've put all our grounds crews back full-time. That was effective two weeks ago. We've done a little bit of extra work on it. We'd normally have one game in a fortnight, and over last weekend and next weekend we're going to have four games in a fortnight.

"It's no different to what they're experiencing up at Metricon or the Gabba, they're experiencing exactly the same things. It's a little bit of extra activity, but it's nothing that we're not comfortable with. Even those grounds up in Queensland, whilst they've got that lush green, it's showing that wear and tear, and I think that's going to continue over the next few months.

"The ground will be fine, the players won't have any issues, it just won't be aesthetically beautiful."

He added that the ground's management was maintaining dialogue with the AFL.

"Yeah, 100 per cent. We deal with the AFL independent turf consultant, and they measure the ground for hardness traction and the like.

"It's not going to hurt us. You'll see some of the wear.

"We're taking measures, but the AFL are accepting that the aesthetics are never going to be what they would if you had one game a fortnight."
