Organic and sinuous lines together with floral motifs are hallmarks of Art Nouveau, whether in architecture, furniture, or fashion.

Architects such as Victor Horta crafted these “whiplash” lines in the palatial homes he designed in Brussels at the start of the 1890s. Artist Alphone Mucha had a similar impact with paintings and murals in Prague.

This highly romanticised view of nature continued well into the 20th century, interpreted in many different ways. For example, architect Charles Rennie McIntosh showed a more geometrical approach to his designs and furniture, with a Japanese influence.

Art Nouveau has had moments of favour, such as in the late 1960s and 70s, when the hippy movement responded to artists such as English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. And the store Biba reinvigorated the fashion scene with its floaty chiffon angle-length dresses.

As with most design periods, there has been a resurgence of interest in Art Nouveau. Some fans, such as Susan Capel, who established Belle Epoque Fine Art in Sydney in 2005, was initially keen to find furniture that complemented her Federation-style home.

“The initial attraction was its sense of craft, of the handmade,” says Susan’s son Leigh Capel, director of the business.

Belle Epoque supplied many of the Art Nouveau pieces for Baz Luhrmann’s period film The Great Gatsby.

Among the pieces now on display at the gallery is a 1890s oak hallstand with built-in leadlight cupboard doors featuring heart motifs. Unmarked, in terms of the designer, this piece has a price tag of $2450.

Another hallstand, also made from oak, is dated at 1895 and was acquired by Susan Capel from Glasgow. Featuring an embossed copper panel depicting stylised flowers, it can be purchased for $2250.
