Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used his first response in question time to spruik the new ad for the Voice – which features musician John Farnham – and condemn the opposition for promising a second referendum on Indigenous recognition.

He quoted from Farnham’s iconic song: “We’re not going to sit in silence, we’re not going to live with fear.”

“Last night, we saw a true Australian hero – John Farnham – lend his voice and his iconic song to the Yes campaign. An inspirational ad showing the moments that have united our country and taken it forward,” Albanese said.

He again went after Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and the Coalition for their pledge to hold a second referendum on constitutional recognition – but not a Voice – if this year’s vote fails.

“They say that, if Australians vote No on October 14, they’ll be subject to another referendum during the next term ... They’re already planning the sequel while doing everything they can to sabotage the original,” Albanese said.

“Their second referendum – no, [it] won’t be on what Indigenous people have asked for – just recognition. Not a Voice. But then, on the Voice, they say they’re going to legislate for a Voice as well.

“So let’s get this right: beneath all of this fear campaign, both sides are saying that they support recognition. Both sides are saying they will legislate for the Voice. The difference is, though, they don’t want it enshrined in the Constitution as Indigenous people have asked for. They know better, Mr Speaker.”
