Australia’s day-night match against the insipid West Indies finished in daylight during the shortest completed one-day game played in this country.

Chasing a paltry 86 for victory at Canberra’s Manuka Oval, Australia scored 2-87 in just 6.5 overs. New super-charged opening batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, playing just his second match for Australia, made 41 in 18 balls, including three sixes in four balls. He also hit five fours and was out after 4.3 overs with the score 1-67.

Australia’s eight-wicket win sealed a 3-0 series clean sweep. Tuesday’s game ranks seventh on the list of the shortest one-day matches in history.

“That’s the way I’ve gone about it this year and that’s the change of mindset,” Fraser-McGurk, 21, told Fox Sports after the victory. “It’s really helped me go out there and play with freedom.

“You can’t just do that. You have to get your teammates and your coach backing you and, if they’re happy with it, then by all means go out there and play with freedom.”

There are three Twenty20 matches to be played between Australia and the beleaguered West Indies over the next week. The tourists’ best players have taken lucrative deals to play in a Twenty20 competition in the UAE funded by IPL clubs.

The West Indies showed unexpected character during the Test series, which they drew 1-1 after a dramatic eight-run win in Brisbane, largely thanks to an exceptional performance from young fast bowler Shamar Joseph.

Unfortunately, he was sent home injured before the one-day series, and with him went any semblance of competition. The West Indies lost the first one-day match in Melbourne by eight wickets with more than 11 overs to spare, and the second game in Sydney by 83 runs.
