Professional and volunteer firefighting organisations from across the country are calling for a royal commission into the bushfire situation.
The NSW Fire Brigade Employees’ Union released a statement on behalf of firefighting associations in NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia calling for the inquiry to “ensure that as a nation we are better prepared to prevent, mitigate and respond to similar outcomes in the future.”
Mick Holton, president of the NSW Volunteer Fire Fighters Association.
“Given the scale of the fires and the number of stakeholders and issues at play, these organisations are calling for a federal Royal Commission,” reads the statement.
A media conference will be held at midday tomorrow with the heads of the firefighting associations, including the NSW Volunteer Fire Fighters Association.
The two Victorian firefighters’ associations are not included in those calling for the inquiry.
